Butane gas also called LPG, GPL, Hydrocarbon or simply propane or butane, is a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases used as a fuel in heating appliances and vehicles. It is increasingly used as an aerosol propellant and a refrigerant.

Properties of Butane:

Melting Point (°F)                               -   31.3

Butane MSDS:

Gas fires should not be extinguished unless flow of Butane gas can be immediately stopped. Shut off gas source and allow gas to burn out. If spill or leak has not ignited, determine if water spray may assist in dispersing gas or vapor to protect personnel attempting to stop leak.
Use water to cool equipment, surfaces and containers exposed to fire and excessive heat. For large fire the use of unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles may be advantageous to further minimize personnel exposure.

Uses of Butane

  • The most common use of butane is as the fuel for the common cigarette lighter. These are sold in both disposable and refillable models.
  • The same butane fuel is used for the butane torch. These are most commonly used in the kitchen for caramelizing sugar in cooking. They may also be used in glassmaking.
  • Butane gas is sold in gas bottles for cooking on a grill or for various uses while camping. Smaller cans of butane are also sold for specially designed camping stoves.
  • Butane can also be mixed with propane and other products to make LPG (liquified petroleum gas). This can be used as fuel for vehicles, in cigarette lighters, in aerosol sprays as a propellant and in the production of other petrochemicals.
  • The purest forms of butane can be used as refrigerants in household refrigerators and freezers. This has replaced the derivatives of methane, which cause depletion of the ozone layer.
  • Cordless hair irons are heated with a cartridge of butane.
Did you know?

Butane is a commonly misused and deliberately inhaled. When inhaled it causes drowsiness, euphoria, unconsciousness, oxygen depletion, memory loss and even frostbite. Purposely inhaling butane has been known to cause death!
In the presence of oxygen butane burns to form carbon dioxide and water.
An unpleasant scent is added to butane gas so that any leaks can be easily detected.

Butane has the lower vapour pressure at equivalent temperatures and is suitable for interior use or outside during the summer. Butane is a very common fuel amongst leisure users and owners of portable heaters. Propane and butane are normally stored in either portable steel cylinders or small bulk fixed storage tanks ready for use.

Safety Data Sheet

  • First aid measures
  • Inhalation: Remove the affected person to fresh air. Keep the patient warm and at rest. If breathing has stopped administer artificial respiration. Give external cardiac massage if necessary. If the person is breathing, but unconscious, place them in the recovery position. Obtain medical assistance immediately.
  • Skin: Burns should be flushed with tepid water to normalise temperature and until circulation returns. Cover the burns with sterile dressings. Do not apply ointments or powders. Obtain medical assistance immediately.
  • Eyes: Cold burns should be flushed immediately with tepid water to normalise temperature. Hold eyelids apart while flushing to rinse entire surface of the eye and lids with water. Cover the eye with a sterile dressing and obtain medical assistance immediately.
  • Fire fighting measures

These materials are delivered, stored and used at temperatures above their flash
point. Avoid all naked flames, sparks, cigarettes, etc.

IN CASE OF FIRE, VACATE THE AREA AND IMMEDIATELY ALERT THE FIRE
BRIGADE

• Ensure an escape path is always available from any fire.
• If gas has ignited, do not attempt to extinguish but, if safe to do so, stop gas
flow and allow to burn out.
• Use water spray to cool heat-exposed containers, and to protect surrounding
areas and personnel effecting shut-off.
• Beware of vapour accumulating to form explosive concentrations. Explosive
vapours may travel, be ignited at remote locations and flash back. A water
spray may be used for vapour dispersal.

  • Accident release measures
  • Clear people away from the area to a safe place

• Do not operate electrical equipment unless flameproof
• Summon aid of emergency services
• Treat or refer casualties if necessary

  • Handling

• No smoking or naked lights
• Switch off mobile phones
• Ensure good ventilation
• Avoid inhalation of vapour
• Avoid contact with liquid and sold storage containers
• When handling cylinders wear protective footwear and
suitable gloves.
• Avoid contact with eyes.

  • Storage
  • Calor Liquefied Butane Gas must be stored in purpose designed mild steel cylinder(s) or tank(s) or other systems of suitable pressure rating. These should be segregated from oxidant gases and other oxidants in store. Reference

Storage and Handling of LPG produced

  • personal protection
  • Wear suitable gloves and overalls to prevent cold burns and frostbite (Neoprene or LPG resistant Gauntlet Glove).

• In filling operations wear protective clothing including impervious gloves,

Major Hazards

• Extremely Flammable (F+)
• Readily forms and explosive air-vapour mixture at ambient temperature.
• Vapour is heavier than air and may travel to remote sources of ignition (e.g. along drainage systems, into basements etc.).
• Liquid leaks generate large volumes of flammable vapour (approximately 250:1).
• Cold burns (frostbite) will result from skin/eye contact with liquid product.
• Liquid release or vapour pressure jets present a risk of serious damage to the eyes.
• Abuse involving wilful inhalation of very high concentrations of vapour, even for short periods can produce unconsciousness and might prove fatal. Inhalation may cause irritation to the nose and throat, headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and drowsiness. In poorly ventilated or confined spaces,
unconsciousness or asphyxiation may result

Benefits

  • Butane is not a highly toxic gas. Therefore, it can be safely, properly stored inside with little worry.
  • We can also extract approximately 12 % more energy per litter from butane than we can propane, which means that, litter for litter, we will get more distance out of butane.
  • Butane is also a cheaper gas to purchase.

Features:

  • Though propane and butane are both gases, their chemical structures vary slightly.
  • In terms, propane is a gas which is consists of three carbon atoms and eight hydrogen atoms.
  • It is a derivative from the petroleum that is created when natural gas and oil is processed. Butane is a four-carbon alkane, as it contains four carbon atoms and 10 hydrogen atoms.

We also manufacture the various types of Butane storage tank:
